Weds 29 Aug 2007: more wildlife

In creating our haven for vegetables we seem to be annoying the wildlife. We had 2 frogs who were disgusted with the movement of paving slabs. Here is the best photo...

Weds 29 Aug 2007: mostly digging

(After)

Helen and '3rd allotment friend' Lucy went and did some digging of roots.
Joel came to have a look but just couldn't resist having a go.
(See, it is addictive).

Tuesday, 28: more hacking with friends

Helen has been attacking stinging nettles with our 2nd 'allotment friend' Richard today (the 1st, I guess, being Paul, by buying us equipment. Anytime you want to help us actually down there Paul is totally fine...) See the bushes magically disappearing over the last few posts!
(No deer though).

You are all welcome to become allotment friends! There is plenty to do!

Saturday, Dani& Helen: we saw a DEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which is totally worth having an allotment for.

So, what are we going to grow then?

Helen and I got together over glasses of coke and tea, and came up with the veg that we'd both most like to grow. First of all we listed all the possible fruit and veg we could grow, by going to the index of my allotment book. We then went down this list and struck some off, according to how difficult they were to grow (time and money...) or the other great deciding factor - whether we'd actually want to eat them if we ever got that far. This was our final list:

Alliums: Garlic, Onions, Leeks

Brassicas: Broccoli, Cabbage, Calabrese, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi, Mizuna, Mibuna, Chinese Leaf

Solans: Potato, Tomato, Chilli,

Legumes: Runner Beans, French Beans, Peas, Asparagus,

Roots: Carrot, Celery, Parsnip, Parsley

Beetroot: Spinach

Lettuce: Lettuce

Cucurbits: Courgettes, Cucumber, Gherkin, Pumpkin, Squash

Salads: Basil, Bay, Dill, Fennel, Lettuce, Mint, Parsley, Rocket, Rosemary, Sage

Fruit: Blackberries, Raspberries, Strawberries.

This debate took the whole entire evening to sort out, and it was interesting finding out each other's likes and dislikes. Helen soon found out that I wouldn't even entertain an allotment without Pumpkins and Squashes, we both found out that our carrots will have about a 1% chance of survival and we both agreed that a Sunflower was an absolute must.
